After a beautiful summer, the colder months are upon us. Winter has such a bad reputation for being a miserable season of nothing but rain and snow, but it doesn’t have to be a curse word.

If you have recently moved to a colder climate in the northern hemisphere, you’re going to need to learn some wardrobe tricks pretty quickly to stay one step ahead of winter.

These five tips below will help you to stay warm when the temperatures hit below freezing:

Invest in a quality base layer

Most people take far too long to embrace the warmth of a quality base layer. Long underwear is your best friend – the thermal kind is the best. You will be amazed at what a difference this seemingly thin layer will make in your life during the coldest time of the year.

Long underwear is designed to be worn as a base layer, which means that it should be tight fitting. The tight fit will also help to keep your body insulated again the freezing temperatures.

Try the three or four layer system

Once you’ve found the perfect base layer, you can then move on to the other layers. Dressing warmly in the winter months is all about creating the perfect layering system for your wardrobe. Your next layer should be a long-sleeve shirt.

Published stylist, Alexandra Nicole Nolan, recommends a go-to oversized flannel button down shirt for layering. “Flannel button-downs can be tied around the waist, worn like a cardigan, sported as a dress, they are just so versatile and can be worn so many ways.”

Layering can either take the form of a polo neck or a simple long-sleeve tee. The layer on top of that one is the third layer; this layer should either be a sweater or a fleece jacket. You can choose to stop there, but if you need a fourth layer then a good quality wool coat or leather jacket is always a popular choice.

Buy a decent coat

Your fall jacket should have been chosen wisely so you can wear it in winter as well. Coats with detachable collars are a great choice; you can add the collar on the days when it is needed.

When choosing the right coat for you, consider things like material choice and whether or not it will flatter your particular body type. The colder climates are better suited to wool or feather-down material.

Buy a coat in a neutral colour to make sure you can team it with multiple outfit choices. Black, grey, camel, and navy are the best colours to choose from.

Accessorize warmly

The best way to stay warm is to make sure that your core is kept warm along with your head and extremities. Accessorize to stay warm. Hats, beanies, gloves, and scarves offer trendy ways to keep your heat in.

If you live in one of the coldest states in the country, look for thermal versions of the above. Some shops will even offer heated versions of some of these, which is good news for people whose bodies struggle to make heat.

Wear boots

Boots are the best footwear choice for the icy season. Boots are fashionable and practical; they can keep the cold out and warmth in. They can also offer protection against puddles and mud, which is a bonus. To stay extra warm, choose pairs lined with wool.

Dressing warmly in the winter is simple when you break it down into easily followable steps. Don’t overthink your wardrobe. There are so many trendy yet warm clothing items available online these days – you’ll be sure to find your new favourites in no time.
