4 Tips to Help You Adjust After Moving to a New City

Moving to a new city is exciting, scary, overwhelming…it’s a lot of things. Packing up all of your things, saying goodbye to friends and family, transporting all of your stuff, selling a house, buying or renting an apartment or home, the moving process is long and stressful.

And then once you finally get yourself moved in and settled, your new city can feel overwhelming.

Maybe this city doesn’t have your favorite grocery store, the weather is different, or you haven’t met the neighbors – whatever it is about your new city that’s making the move more difficult there’s a way to help adjust.

Tip #1: Move in 100%

Moving out of your old home was probably exhausting, and the idea of having to unpack everything you just recently packed sounds daunting. But you should do it. The quickest way to make your new home feel like your home is to move in completely.

Don’t just pull out the items you know you’ll need right away and slowly move in over the next few months. Rip the band-aid off and spend a few labor-intensive days moving 100% in.

You’ll feel more organized, at home, and like you can relax after all that hard work is over.

Tip #2: Meet the Neighbors

I felt slightly anxious to meet the new neighbors when I first moved. I loved my old neighbors and didn’t feel ready to try and do the whole make new friends thing. I know it’s tempting to wait and let your neighbors come over and introduce themselves, but who knows when that will happen.

Be brave and introduce yourself. You are neighbors, you’ll most definitely be bumping into each other now and then. Your new neighbor and friend can help you learn more about the city. They can give you advice on what stores have the best prices, a good dentist near you, which teachers are the best, which Mexican restaurant has the best shrimp tacos, and maybe even help introduce you to other neighbors.

Tip #3: Explore the Local Stores

I am a creature of habit and I like going through my daily routine and keeping things the same. I like going to the store and knowing which aisles have what food and what stores carry the brands I prefer.

But, it’s smart to explore new local stores. It’s important to be open to new things when you first move, and getting familiar with the local grocery stores and restaurants is a great way to get to know your new city.

Tip #4: Keep up with Old Friends

My final tip is to remember that even though you may have moved away from great friends and family, you can still stay in touch with them. In fact, staying in contact with old friends and family can help you more easily adjust to your new city.

Today we have amazing technology that allows you yo text, call, or even video chat with friends from anywhere. I’m sure your old friends miss you too and want to know all about what your new city is like.

Remember to keep an open mind as you experience new things in your new home. Keep in touch with old friends and reach out to create new relationships. You’ll be loving your new city in no time.
