One quick way to help any girl feel confident and sassy is to throw a little color on her lips. The added drama to your makeup makes you feel like you can take on the world. If the realm of lip color is new to you then here are a few pointers to get you started off on the right foot.

Beginner

If you aren’t used to wearing product on your lips then start out simple. Gloss or even lip balm is a great way to get used to wearing something around your mouth without having to worry about smearing or smudging color.

When wearing lip gloss, try to pick something that will help keep your lips feeling fresh and free. If you can feel them drying out or the gloss makes your mouth feel sticky then try switching to a different lip gloss. You want the product on your lips to be comfortable so you don’t worry about your lips every minute of the day.

Application

Once you decide you’re ready to move on to some color of lipstick or stain, you’ll need to help your lips as much as you can. Many lip colors tend to dehydrate your lips so here are a few things you can use to prevent that from happening.

  • Exfoliate – When you brush your teeth run the toothbrush over your lips as well. I don’t mean to scrub them, but give them a little brush to help knock off any dead skin that might be lingering. This will help the color to stick to the actual lip instead of to any dried dead stuff.
  • Moisturize Lipstick – Put a little moisturizing butter or lip balm on your lips to help lock in moisture before you add your color over top.
  • Moisturize Lipstain – Most lip stains come with their own lip balm that works best with the product, however, I’ve found that if it’s a good stain that’s supposed to last at least 6 hours, then you can usually swipe a regular chapstick over top the stain to keep your smile moisturized.
  • Lipliner – Before adding your color use lipliner to trace the shape of your lips. Don’t draw outside of your natural lips. While you may think that gives you an especially good pout, what it actually does it make you look like a Bratz doll.

Lip Color

There are lots of rules about what colors you should or shouldn’t wear depending on your skin tone, but in all honesty, it is completely up to you. Anyone can break the rules if they wear their lip color with enough confidence.

Lauren Conrad, a beauty blogger, suggests going to your local drugstore and picking a few lip colors to try out. She explains that this is a great way to find what colors you like without breaking the bank. Once you have an idea of what works for you then you can spend a little more for quality lip color.

Lipstick vs. Lipstain

There is no right or wrong answer for which is better, stick or stain. If you live a relatively active life and don’t have time for touchups then stain may be your best option. If you like to change things up a lot or are just wearing your color for an evening out then lipstick is a fabulous option.

Try out both and see what works best for your lifestyle. Just keep in mind that a bold lip stain color is a commitment and the application process isn’t very forgiving. If you don’t have a very steady hand then practice with some lipstick before applying your stain, because once on they are usually difficult to get off.

Whatever you choose to wear, gloss, stick, or stain, wear it with confidence and enjoy the beauty that is you. You are fabulous and no one can tell you otherwise.
